On the 24th of April 2017 Libertas – Inštitut za svobodno kritiko, together with our partners Austrian Economics Center and Fokus 2031 held the Ljubljana stop of the Free Market Road Show. The topic discussed was The World After Brexit and Trump. We had several prominent speakers from all over the world from professors from different universities to think tank representatives and foreign diplomats. The topics discussed were current and interesting and the variety of guests provided interesting insight into the topics discussed.
Despite our best efforts, the number of attendees was far below our expectations. The reason for such low attendance numbers can, in my opinion, be attributed to a general sense of apathy among today’s younger generations and a feeling that, at least in Slovenia, the collectivist ideas of a statist society are working and have won. And while it may seem so on the surface as soon as we look at the broader picture we realize that is far from the truth.
The share of government expenditure as a percentage of GDP is a staggering 48%. People in Slovenia also seem to believe in the myths of “Free Healthcare” and “Free Education system”. Often it is possible to hear arguments in support of raising the minimum wage while the arguments against are mostly unheard or ignored.
It is my firm belief that much more must be done to promote Free market capitalism and personal liberty in Slovenia as well as abroad, that is why despite the challenges we face I see immense potential to change the minds of my own and younger generations to make our future freer and more prosperous, that is why it is the duty of those of us who know that this is the way to go, to keep fighting for what we believe and never give up.
